In the 1800's, families largely relied on running stoves and unique home features like window transoms and long halls to temper the hot and cold. The concept of central heating or cooling had not yet been invented, nor the ability to monitor temperatures and raise or lower them accordingly. Tracking the temperature of a home or other location can be a difficult task without a handy device like the thermostat. These small devices monitor and maintain temperatures at specified comfort levels. Andrew Ure, a Scottish chemist invented the first modern Thermostat and from this invention today central heating and cooling systems have come to rely on them for efficiency.
